Police charge man after unprovoked assault in Sydney CBD

A man will face court today charged over an alleged unprovoked assault in the Sydney CBD overnight.

Police have been told a 59-year-old man was walking along George Street just after 7pm (Saturday 4 February 2023), when a younger man allegedly punched him once in the head.

He fell unconscious backwards, hitting his head on the footpath.

The younger man reportedly left the scene running towards Sussex Street.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man for multiple facial fractures and head injuries before he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a serious condition. Police have been advised the man will be undergoing surgery today.

Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 37-year-old man at a nearby hotel on Sussex Street about 3.30am (Sunday 5 February 2023).

He was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.

He's been refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday 5 February 2023).

The CBD light rail service was disrupted for about 30 minutes as paramedics treated the injured man.
