Police charge man after vehicle stolen, destroyed by fire at Tamworth

A man has been charged with multiple property-related offences after a vehicle was stolen from a caravan park and destroyed by fire in Tamworth.

Between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Friday (2 July 2021), car keys and other personal items were stolen from a caravan parked within a caravan park on Peel Street.

A Hyundai SUV was also stolen.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

Shortly after 8.30am on Saturday (3 July 2021), police responded to reports the stolen vehicle had been seen travelling on Hilton Street with smoke seen coming from the area soon after.

Police were told a man was seen walking from the area.

As part of inquiries, officers canvassed the area and engaged in a foot pursuit with a 19-year-old man in Lydia Street who was arrested a short time later on Vera Street.

During a search of the man police located a stolen bank card, methylamphetamine and a pocketknife.

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with break enter and steal, steal motor vehicle, malicious damage by fire, possess prohibited drug, possess knife, and larceny.

Police will allege in court the bank card was stolen from a motor vehicle on Darrell Road, Calala, on Friday (2 July 2021) evening.

He was bail refused to appear before Tamworth Local Court today (Monday 5 July 2021).

The Hyundai SUV was located completely destroyed by fire.
