Police charge man and woman after loaded firearm found

A man and woman have been charged after South Melbourne police uncovered a loaded firearm in a stolen car in Southbank overnight.

The pair, a St Kilda man and Wheelers Hill woman both aged 27-years, have each been charged with prohibited person possess a firearm, ammunition offences, theft of motor car, possess ecstasy and methamphetamine and handle stolen goods.

The charges follow an incident in a rear laneway behind Dorcas Street about 1.15am when a man and woman were found in a stolen car and to be in possession of a shot-gun.

Several other items were found in their car following a subsequent search of the vehicle including alleged stolen property, drugs believed to be ecstasy and methamphetamine and a quantity of alleged ammunition.

The man and woman will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
