Police charge man over assault at Wollongong

A man will appear in court tomorrow charged over the alleged assault of a man in the state's Illawarra region at the weekend.

About 2.40am on Sunday (22 January 2023), emergency services were called to Crown Street, Wollongong, following reports a man had been found unconscious on the footpath.

The man was injured after allegedly being punched in the head and falling to the ground.

The 24-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Hospital before he self-discharged and travelled to Brisbane, where he attended the Prince Charles Hospital.

Scans revealed the man sustained head injuries and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District commenced an investigation and following inquiries, including a public appeal for information, a 19-year-old man was arrested after attending Wollongong Police Station about 3.20pm today (Tuesday 24 January 2023).

He was charged with affray and recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 25 January 2023).
