Police charge man over assault - Surry Hills

Police have charged a man over the alleged assault of another man in Surry Hills overnight.

Just before 11.15pm (Monday 11 October 2021), emergency services were called to a tobacconist at Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, following reports a man – armed with a hammer – had entered a store and assaulted a male employee.

The employee sustained minor head injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

Following an extensive search of the area, a 24-year-old man was arrested nearby.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault, shoplifting, armed with intent to commit indictable offence and breach of bail.

The Redfern man was refused bail to appear at central Local Court today (Tuesday 12 October 2021).
