Police charge man with assault after punch attack in Sydney CBD

A man has been charged with assault after an attack that left an 18-year-old hospitalised in Sydney’s CBD last month.

About 2.30am on Saturday 23 November 2019, two men – both aged 18 – were walking along Park Street, Sydney, when one of them was struck from behind by an unknown man, who then fled the scene.

Following a public police appeal, a 22-year-old man was identified as the alleged attacker and police commenced inquiries into his whereabouts.

At 4pm yesterday (Friday 6 December 2019), a man was observed allegedly shoplifting items from a supermarket on George Street in Sydney. He was approached by security and police, when he ran from the store onto Park Street, Sydney.

Police pursued the man on foot on York and Market streets, before losing sight of him.

Following inquiries, police became aware that the man was also wanted for the alleged November assault.

Shortly after around 4.15pm, police – assisted by hotel security – arrested a 22-year-old man inside a hotel on George Street. He was taken to Day Street Police Station where he became aggressive and was conveyed to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment.

At 2am today (Saturday 7 December 2019), the man was released from hospital and returned to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with shoplifting, escape police custody and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The 22-year-old was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Saturday 7 December 2019).
