Police charge man with murder, Woree

A 22-year-old Woree man has been charged with murder following an investigation into the death of a two-month-old infant at Woree in 2021.

Police were first made aware of the infant's death when taken to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition on June 6.

The baby was subsequently airlifted to Townsville University Hospital where he was later declared deceased.

An Incident Centre was established at the Cairns Police Facility and investigations were coordinated by Child Protection and Investigation Unit detective's under Operation Tango Weimar.

Operation Tango Weimar was supported by local investigative resources as well as assistance from the Brisbane's Homicide Group and the Child Trauma Task Force.

These investigations have led police to allege that the infant was in sole company of the 22-year-old man at a Woree residence.

On January 29 2022 (Saturday), the 22-year-old man was charged with murder.

The man appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court today and remanded in custody to reappear on March 30.
