Police charge two after illegal protest at Bankstown

Two people have been charged and another 8 Penalty Infringement Notices (PINs) issued for breaching the state's Public Health Order after an unauthorised protest in Sydney's south-west this afternoon.

About 4.20pm (Saturday 17 July 2021), officers from Bankstown Police Area Command were called to Paul Keating Park, Bankstown, following reports of protest activity.

Six males – aged 29, 19, 55, 24, 17 and 35, and two women, aged 24 and 26 – were all issued PINs after they allegedly refused to leave the area, while a 57-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were arrested.

Additionally, the 24-year-old man was given a Future Court Attendance Notice for possess prohibited drug while the 35-year-old man received infringements for offensive behaviour and offensive language.

The man and woman were taken to Bankstown Police Station, where the man was charged with fail to comply requirement public health order, not comply with direction given by police officer, and custody of knife in public place.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Sunday 18 July 2021).

The woman was charged with fail to comply requirement public health order and granted conditional bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court Thursday 2 September 2021.
