Police charge two after series of explosions in north and eastern suburbs

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad charged two men today as part of their ongoing investigation into a series of reported explosions in the north and eastern suburbs earlier this month.

It is alleged eight devices were detonated on 4 July between 7 and 9.45pm in suburbs including Northcote, Ivanhoe, Heidelberg Heights, Kew and Kew East.

This morning Arson and Explosives Squad investigators, with the assistance of the Bomb Response Unit, executed search warrants at residences in Liberty Parade, Bellfield and Greenhills Road, Bundoora.

A 30-year-old Bellfield man and a 27-year-old Bundoora were arrested and subsequently interviewed by police.

Both men have each been charged with the following 24 charges:

• Cause explosion likely to endanger life x8;

• Reckless conduct endanger life x8; and

• Reckless conduct endanger person x8.

They will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court this evening.

The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has further information about the incidents or saw them posted on social pages.
