Police charge two after stolen vehicles; pursuit at Moree

A man and boy have been charged by police investigating two stolen vehicles and a pursuit at Moree.

Officers attached to New England Police District commenced an investigation after two cars – a Mercedes Benz convertible and a Toyota Prado – were stolen in Moree, after 6pm on Saturday (30 April 2022).

Police received numerous reports sighting the two vehicles driving dangerously in a number of locations throughout Moree.

The convertible was found on fire the intersection of Edward Street and Jones Avenue about 5.40am yesterday (Sunday 1 May 2022). Police extinguished the blaze and the vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

About three hours later, patrolling police sighted the SUV on the Newell Highway, Moree; a pursuit was initiated when the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed.

Police deployed road spikes but terminated the pursuit a short time later due to safety concerns.

The SUV was found on fire 20 minutes later behind Morton Street and Robinson Road.

Following inquiries, officers attended a home on Arunga Street, Moree, about 4pm arresting a 22-year-old man.

Police attended another home in Moree a short time later and arrested a 16-year-old boy.

Both were taken to Moree Police Station and charged.

The man has been charged with two counts of be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, and never-licenced person drive vehicle on road.

He was refused bail to appear at Moree Local Court today (Monday 2 May 2022).

The 16-year-old boy was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and drive conveyance taken without consent of owner. He was refused bail to appear before a Children's Court today (Monday 2 May 2022).

Investigations continue.
