Police Charge Two After Vehicle Stop At Ballina

A man and woman will face court today charged following a vehicle stop at Ballina last night.

About 9.45pm (Tuesday 18 August 2026), Highway Patrol officers stopped a vehicle on Tamar Street, Ballina, that had been reported as stolen from Queensland.

When the vehicle stopped, the passenger ran from the vehicle along Tamar Street where he was arrested a short time later.

During a search of the man and a bag he had dropped, police allegedly located and seized a firearm, ammunition, and a glass pipe.

The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old woman, and the 29-year-old passenger were taken to Ballina Police Station.

The passenger was charged with six offences,

  • Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm
  • Not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority
  • Acquire firearm no licence or permit-prohibited firearm, and
  • Possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs.

Four outstanding warrants were also executed for alleged domestic violence related offences.

The driver was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, and breach of bail.

Both were refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 1 today (Wednesday 19 August 2026).
