Police charge two over theft of ute, pursuit at Armidale

A man and teenage boy have been charged following a police operation targeting property crime in the state's north.

Officers attached to New England Police District, with the additional support of three Police Dogs and their handlers from Inverell, Tamworth and Sydney, cracked down on property crime in Armidale this week.

Steal from motor vehicle and break and enter offences were an area of focus during the operation.

Between 8.30pm and 10pm yesterday (Thursday 4 February 2021), a black 2020 Holden Colorado HSV dual cab utility and trailer were stolen from a home on Railway Parade, Armidale.

A short time later, officers attached to New England Police District observed the vehicle driving at excessive speed along Canambe Street and indicated for it to stop.

The ute allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle crashed into a plastic bollard a short time later and its two occupants ran from the scene.

The occupants, two males aged 20 and 17, were tracked by a police dog and arrested on Ryan Avenue.

The teenager was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive while licence suspended, larceny and drive vehicle under influence of alcohol.

He was refused bail to appear at a children's court on Thursday 18 March 2021.

The man was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and larceny.

He was bail refused to Armidale Local Court on Thursday 18 March 2021.

The ute and trailer have been recovered; however various power tools remain outstanding.

About 3.45am today (Friday 5 February 2021), officers observed a grey Hyundai Accent travelling on Barney and Dangar streets, Armidale.

A pursuit was initiated after the vehicle failed to stop when indicated to by police.

Officers will allege objects were thrown at the police vehicle during the pursuit causing minor damage.

The driver exited the car and jumped the fence of a Hiddens Street address before running from police.

The area was canvassed however the man was not found.

Investigations continue.
