Police Hunt Pair After M5 Tunnel Car Fire, Drug Find

Police are searching for two people after drugs were found after a car fire closed a major arterial road tunnel.

Emergency services responded to reports of silver Audi sedan was on fire about 6.20am today (Wednesday 16 July 2025), inside the eastbound lanes of the M5 Tunnel at Wolli Creek.

Officers from St George Police Area Command were told smoke was seen coming from the engine but it was driven a further 100m before stopping in lane one.

Two occupants – a male and female - have left the vehicle and were last seen walking east inside the tunnel towards the Grand Parade exit.

Sprinkler systems were activated and the car fire was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW. Damage was contained to the engine bay of the vehicle.

When the vehicle was checked by police, methamphetamine and cannabis was found inside.

The vehicle and drugs have been seized for further examination.

There were no reports of any injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed along with one westbound lane inside the M5 Tunnel.

At 7.50am all lanes were re-opened.

During the closure significant traffic delays were experienced.

The vehicle has not been reported stolen.
