Police are appealing for assistance from the public after a string of incidents in the state's north this week.
Officers attached to Oxley Police District have commenced an investigation after several incidents in the Tamworth area on the evening of Wednesday 26 August 2026 and the early hours of Thursday 27 August 2026.
Police have been informed three unknown males attempted to break into a home on David Street, Tamworth, about 11.45pm on Wednesday, before they were disturbed by a pet and left.
Shortly after, the group – including one who was armed with a machete – attempted to steal from a motor vehicle on Diane Street, South Tamworth.
About 1am on Thursday, the group attempted a carjacking at the intersection of Brisbane and Peel Streets in which a person was threatened.
About 1.30am the same day, the group – who were travelling in a stolen Hyundai SUV – attempted to break into several motels on Goonoo Goonoo Road, Tamworth, before two males forced entry into a motel on the same road.
The pair – who were dressed in all-black with face coverings - threatened a man and woman – aged in their 70s – with a large machete before stealing the keys to a Hyundai SUV.
Both males then fled the scene in the two Hyundai SUVs.
Police are also investigating a reported fuel theft from a service station on Jewry Street, Taminda, which occurred about 1.35am on Thursday.
Shortly after, the group arrived in Fitzroy Street, Tamworth, where they extensively damaged two parked police vehicles.
About 2am, police located one of the Hyundai SUVs driving on Green Street, West Tamworth; a pursuit was initiated and terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
Police established a crime scene at the motel and commenced an investigation into the incidents, which are believed to be linked.
Following inquiries, one of the stolen Hyundai SUVs was later recovered in Matheson Street, West Tamworth, and was seized for forensic examination.
As inquiries are ongoing, anyone with information – including CCTV/dashcam or mobile phone vision – is urged to come forward.
