Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating an assault in Werribee on 23 December.
Investigators have been told a Hoppers Crossing man was driving west along Heaths Road about 2.30pm when a silver Subaru sideswiped the driver's side and overtook the vehicle.
The Subaru then stopped and reversed back into the victim's car.
Around four males exited the Subaru and assaulted the victim while he was seated in the driver's seat.
The offenders then got back into the Subaru and drove west along Heaths Road.
The 38-year-old victim was taken to hospital with a broken eye socket, arm and jaw.
Investigators believe there may have been a second offending vehicle involved, both vehicles and offenders are yet to be located at this stage.
