Police investigate school fire in Mitcham

Police and emergency services responded to reports of a fire in Mitcham this morning.

Investigators have been told a fire broke out at a school on Whitehorse Road shortly after midnight.

Fire Rescue Victoria extinguished the blaze which caused extensive damage to one of the buildings and spread to nearby vegetation.

Investigators are yet to establish the cause of the fire, but it is believed to be suspicious.

A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby and is assisting police with enquiries.

A crime scene has been established pending examination of specialist fire investigators.
