Police lay assault charges at Gympie

A man has been charged after allegedly releasing a noxious substance in a Gympie licensed premises on Saturday August 6 which resulted in the building being evacuated and patrons receiving medical treatment.

Police were called to a business along Mary Street in Gympie around 1.00am following reports of an unknown substance being released within two separate areas of the premises.

Approximately 100 staff and patrons were evacuated whilst emergency crews worked to determine the source of the chemical.

A number of people received medical treatment at the scene for symptoms such as eye and throat irritation.

Ongoing investigations by Gympie police including the review of CCTV led to a search warrant being executed at Pie Creek this afternoon, August 12 which allegedly uncovered a quantity of chili spray.

A 35-year-old Pie Creek man was arrested on scene and charged with five counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was granted police bail is due to appear in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday August 29. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police are appealing for any further witnesses who were present to come forward.
