Police lay charges after fatal crash south of Gunnedah

Police have charged a man following a triple fatal crash south of Gunnedah earlier this week.

About 6.30am on Wednesday (20 December 2023), emergency services were called to the Kamilaroi Highway at Curlewis, about 20km south of Gunnedah, following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District arrived to find a sedan had crashed into a tree.

Three passengers, a 27-year-old man and two women, aged 24 and 25, all died at the scene.

The front seat passenger, a 25-year-old woman, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

The driver of the car, a 24-year-old man, suffered arm and chest injuries and was taken to Tamworth Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing.

Police established a crime scene, with specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit commencing an investigation into the crash.

Following inquires, the 24-year-old man was released from hospital before he was arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

He has been charged with three counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and one count of negligent driving occasioning death.

The Westdale man was granted conditional bail to appear before Tamworth Local Court on Monday 22 January 2024.
