Police lay charges - Aggravated assault - Groote Eylandt

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man after a number of incidents on Groote Eylandt in January.

On 3 January 2023, the 22-year-old allegedly assaulted his female partner and engaged in property offending while avoiding police apprehension.

On 31 January 2023, he allegedly assaulted his partner at a residence with a blunt weapon, before assaulting two men with an edged weapon and fleeing the scene.

The female victim was treated for minor injuries while the two men did not received any injuries.

The 22-year-old allegedly stole a vehicle from a nearby location and engaged in dangerous driving around the area.

The Dog Operations Unit, Drone Unit and Territory Response Group deployed to Groote Eylandt and with assistance from local police, arrested the man yesterday without incident.

He has since been charged with:

  • Aggravated assault x 2
  • Breach domestic violence order x 2
  • Recklessly endanger life x 2
  • Going armed in public
  • Criminal damage
  • Unlawful entry building
  • Unlawful use of motor vehicle
  • Drive manner dangerous

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Remote Senior Sergeant David Hamlyn said "Investigations remain ongoing and this arrest was the result of extensive planning from police as we work to keep our community safe.

"Violence in any form, particularly domestic and family violence, is not welcome in our community and we continue to urge those affected to reach out and seek help."
