- $16 million to recognise and acknowledge treatment of medically retired officers

Applications are now open for the McGowan Government's Redress Scheme for medically retired police officers.
The $16 million scheme announced by the Minister for Police in October, involves tailored, ex gratia-type payments to recognise the service and acknowledge the circumstances and treatment of some ill or injured officers.
Over the past several weeks, the assessment panel has been consulting with the Medically Retired Police Officers Association and WA Police Union.
A website has been set up to ensure the process of applying is as straightforward as possible.
The website, which can be accessed at http://www.WAmrpoliceredress.wa.gov.au, contains eligibility criteria and further information on the application process.
The scheme, which provides for a maximum payment of $150,000, is designed to offer some recognition of the indignity and treatment of some medically retired officers.
A panel chaired by former Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan APM will assess the applications which close on April 8, 2019.
Work has already begun on drafting new regulations to create a new standalone provision of the Police Act to ensure the medical retirement process is completely disassociated from Section 8.
