Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating a fatal traffic crash at Glen Aplin, south of Stanthorpe, this afternoon, 9 May.
Initial investigations indicate at 1.50pm, a blue MG ZS SUV was travelling south on New England Highway when the driver took evasive action to avoid a collision with a car travelling in the opposite direction on the incorrect side of the road.
The vehicles did not collide however the MG struck a culvert on the side of the road, rolling several times before striking a power pole.
The driver of the other vehicle failed to stop.
One of the passengers in the MG, a 92-year-old Wallangarra man, was declared deceased at the scene.
The other passenger, an 85-year-old woman also from Wallangarra, was transported to Stanthorpe Hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital.
The 20-year-old female driver received minor injuries and was transported to hospital as a precaution.
Investigations are focusing on identifying the second vehicle involved in the incident, which was a light-coloured sedan of unknown make and model.
Police are urgently seeking information from anyone who may have seen a vehicle driving erratically in the area or who may have dashcam footage from the New England Highway around the time of the crash.
