Police Shooting Sparks Critical Incident in Newcastle 3 March

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was shot by police in Newcastle this morning.

The Northern Operations Support Group and Northern Region Domestic Violence High Risk Offender Team attended a unit block on Honeysuckle Drive about 8.30am (Tuesday 3 March 2026), to arrest a man wanted on five outstanding arrest warrants.

Officers forced entry to a unit where a man - allegedly armed with a knife - confronted police.

Two Tasers were deployed; however, both were ineffective against the man.

The man allegedly continued threatening officers with the knife before a police officer discharged a firearm shooting the man.

The 36-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

He was taken under police guard to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway by Newcastle City Police District.

A critical incident team from Lake Macquarie Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
