Police are cracking down on illegal and dangerous use of e-scooters and e-bikes along the Kedron Brook Bikeway as part of Operation X-ray Stamp, running throughout August.
The operation has been launched to conduct proactive high-visibility and targeted patrols, focusing on unsafe and illegal use of personal mobility devices (PMDs) to improve safety and reduce risks for all bikeway users.
With many offences involving children, the operation strongly focuses on educating both children and their parents about their responsibilities and the consequences of allowing their child's illegal use of these devices.
The operation includes partnerships with local high schools to deliver safety education and investigate reports of illegal and dangerous PMD use, including those shared on social media or reported by the public.
Senior Sergeant Saskia Toohey said the operation aims to protect the community and reduce incidents of harm.
"The main issues we see with e-scooters and e-bikes include unlicensed driving of unregistered vehicles, speeding, dangerous driving such as swerving in and out of pedestrians, and illegal modifications."
"For an e-bike/e-scooter to be legal, pedals must be the primary source of power, and the motor must not exceed 250 watts. If it doesn't comply, it's considered a motorbike, requiring a licence, registration, and insurance.
"These devices can be powerful, and when used dangerously can cause serious injuries or fatalities.
"Our focus is on education and engagement, but the QPS will take enforcement action, including issuing fines or confiscating non-compliant devices, if necessary, to stop unsafe behaviour.
"Parents can be fined or charged if they allow their child to use an e-scooter or e-bike illegally or dangerously.
"We urge parents to familiarise themselves with the rules and work with their children to ensure they understand and respect them. This is about saving lives and preventing life-changing injuries.
The Queensland Police Service encourages the community to report unsafe or illegal PMD use and work together to ensure the safety of all bikeway users.
