Police update: Assault in Darwin City

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Unit have arrested a 40-year-old male in relation to two alleged assaults in recent weeks.

The first incident occurred near the Waterfront Precinct around 1am on Thursday 28 February 2019. The male allegedly approached the victim and a struggle ensued. The victim fled the scene and notified emergency services. She sustained substantial grazes, bruising and a head laceration.

The second incident occurred on Wednesday 6 March 2019. The victim was allegedly approached by a male on the Esplanade around 9:30pm. The male asked the victim for a cigarette before making unwanted advances. The victim attempted to leave and got into a struggle with the male which caused him to flee the scene.

The male was arrested today in Smith Street Mall. He was subsequently charged with one count of recklessly endangering serious harm and two counts of aggravated assault.

Police urge the public to be mindful of their personal safety when walking at night.
