Police update: Death in custody, Kowanyama Watchhouse

The Ethical Standards Command is continuing investigations around the death of a 51-year-old man in the Kowanyama Watchhouse on Wednesday, November 9.

The man was taken into custody in relation to allegations of domestic and family violence related offences.

While in custody at the Kowanyama Watchhouse, the man was located unresponsive in his cell.

First aid was immediately provided, and the man was urgently transported to Kowanyama Medical Clinic, where he was declared deceased.

Three QPS members involved have been re-assigned to perform alternative duties outside of Kowanyama whilst the matter is under investigation.

Initial investigations have confirmed the members involved did not have physical contact with the man at the time of the incident.

The man's family members have viewed CCTV of the incident as part of the QPS' commitment to an open and transparent investigation of this matter.

The matter remains before the State Coroner.

The Crime and Corruption Commission will provide independent oversight of the Ethical Standards Command investigation.
