Police update: Fatal crash west of Albury

Two people have died following a crash in the state's south yesterday.

Emergency Services were called to the Riverina Highway, Howlong, 30km west of Albury about 4.45pm (Wednesday 23 December 202200, after reports of a Toyota Yaris and a Toyota Landcruiser had collided head-on.

The Yaris driver, a 62-year-old man, and a 54-year-old female passenger died at the scene. A second passenger, an 81-year-old man, was freed after being trapped. He was treated by paramedics and taken to Albury Base Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The Landcruiser driver, a 38-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Albury Base Hospital.

Officers from Murray River Police District attended and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
