Police Update: Hit And Run Charges At Coolangatta

A 40-year-old man is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today after being charged in relation to an alleged hit-and-run traffic crash at Coolangatta earlier this month.

It will be alleged that just after 7pm on 10 January, the man was driving a white Mitsubishi Express van on Marine Parade when he struck two 15-year-old girls riding a DiroDi Rover Pro E-bike in the bicycle lane.

The man allegedly failed to remain at the scene and render assistance, continuing on Marine Parade before crossing the border into New South Wales.

Both girls received serious injuries as a result of the crash.

The 40-year-old Urangan man attended Coolangatta police station yesterday afternoon, 23 January, and was charged with three offences, including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and left scene of incident, driver fail to remain at incident and render assistance showing callous disregard for the needs of a person injured, and driving of motor vehicle without a driver licence disqualified under s79B.
