Police update: Officers assaulted - Arrests

Three people, who are alleged to have physically attacked two police officers during a disturbance in a Tennant Creek town camp, have been arrested and charged.

Officers were responding to reports of a disturbance involving armed men in a Tennant Creek town camp when on arrival at the scene they were approached by a 19-year-old man armed with a knife.

The man ignored police directions to drop the weapon and continued to approach police, when he was tasered by attending officers.

Police were arresting the offender when a 38-year-old man is alleged to have ran at an officer and attempted to kick her to the head, before assaulting her with a folded gazebo.

Officers withdrew from the area when several people surrounding and starting throwing rocks at the vehicle, one of which shattered the passenger side window and covered both officers with glass. Both officers received glass cuts to the face and eyes and required medical treatment at the Tennant Creek Hospital.

Investigations undertaken by the Tennant Creek Investigations Unit identified three men involved in the assault of the police officers.

A 19-year-old man will appear before court on the following charges.

  • Assault Police
  • Possess controlled weapon at night
  • Engage in violent conduct

A 19- year-old man will face court on the following charges;

  • Engage in violent conduct
  • Armed with an offensive weapon at night

A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged with;

  • Assault Police x 2
  • Armed with an offensive weapon at night
  • Engage in violent conduct

A 17-year-old male was arrested and later released to be summonsed at a later date for Engage in Violent Conduct.
