Nillumbik Shire Council is seeking feedback on its draft Access Equity and Inclusion Policy, outlining Council's commitment to a more equal and inclusive Nillumbik.

Mayor Frances Eyre said creating an inclusive community was at the heart of all Council decision making.

"We have a diverse community – in ability, age, sexuality, faith, gender identity, nationality, language, socio economic background – we are committed to providing everyone equal access in everything we do," Cr Eyre said.

"This policy builds on the work we are already doing, but we want to ensure we are heading in the right direction and don't leave anyone behind."

The draft policy outlines Council's commitment to accessible, equitable and inclusive practice across all Council activities with its purpose to:

  • Demonstrate leadership
  • Provide a lens over all council services
  • Inform council decision making and investment
  • Identify when and how we advocate
  • Identify and consider unique and intersecting needs of priority groups
  • Commit to strengthening relationships with partners, local service providers, organisation and community.

The draft policy is available for feedback on Participate Nillumbik until 11.59pm, Sunday 24 April.

Council will also host two online community forums to discuss the policy:

  • Tuesday 5 April, 12pm-1pm, register to attend here.
  • Wednesday 6 April, 6pm-7pm, register to attend here.

Once the consultation period closes, there will be an opportunity to provide feedback to councillors in person at the Planning and Consultation Committee meeting on Tuesday 14 June.

The final policy will be presented to Council for endorsement at the Council Meeting of 28 June 2022.
