City of Darwin's 2025 Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up (PCCU) is now complete, with more than 800 tonnes of waste collected from across the municipality.

Over six weeks, City of Darwin crews collected 818 tonnes of waste, supporting the community to reduce potential hazards ahead of the cyclone season, while diverting 36% away from landfill for recycling and reuse.

The collection included 214 tonnes of scrap metal, 74 tonnes of white goods, and 2 tonnes of e-waste - all materials that can be recycled and given a second life.

However, prohibited items were still found on verges, including asbestos, commercial waste, fridges containing food, and items placed out after collections were completed.

Total waste collected increased from 740 tonnes in 2024, though the diversion rate dropped slightly from last year's 39%.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles thanked Darwin residents for their cooperation throughout the clean-up to support a safe and efficient program.

"The annual clean-up plays an important role in helping our city and communities get cyclone-ready," he said.

"By sorting waste into material types before placing it on the verge, residents helped our crews recycle more and complete collections more efficiently."

City of Darwin is committed to being a clean, environmentally responsible city, and can achieve that by cutting down on the waste we produce, Mr Styles said.

"By focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling, we can improve environmental outcomes while also supporting cyclone preparedness."

Mr Styles reminds the community that any remaining items on verges need to be removed by the resident, as this is now considered illegal dumping.

Residents are encouraged to continue managing waste responsibly year-round by taking green waste and recyclables to the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, Reviva Reuse shop and local transfer stations.
