Tamworth's Sports and Entertainment Precinct is set to be safer and more accessible for pedestrians with important upgrades worth more than $1.42 million now underway.
Several improvements will be constructed at the roundabout at the front of AELEC, and adjacent to TRECC on The Ringers Road and along Longyard Drive.
These improvements include new wombat and pedestrian crossings, the installation of safety fencing and street lighting along with the construction of a 3m wide shared path along Longyard Drive.
The upgrades will not only improve safety in the area for both pedestrians and road users but they will also support and encourage exercise through the use of the active transport network.
Jenny Aitchison, Minister for Roads, said as regional communities continue to grow, it's important that local infrastructure keeps pace with demand and supports safety for pedestrians and road users.
"The upgrade to the Sports and Entertainment Precinct will deliver important safety improvements, whilst enhancing access throughout the precinct for the community to enjoy," she said.
Murray Russell, Manager Operations at Tamworth Regional Council, said Council was "constantly looking to make our roads and active transport network safer and more accessible".
"We are currently updating our Active Transport Strategy through community consultation to identify other projects to expand our active transport network," he said.
Mr Russell said construction will be done in stages from July through to December this year.
"There will be some road closures during that time and traffic control will be in place when needed," he said.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Australian Government's Road Safety Program.
The Road Safety Program aims to improve road safety by minimising the occurrence of severe injuries and fatalities, with a focus on vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Under the Program, the Australian and New South Wales Governments have committed over $586 million in funding for works across the state since 2023.
