Premier Mark McGowan has today provided further details on the State Government's plans to build up to eight new one and two bedroom units as part of the Spencer Park renewal project.
The Premier made the announcement while visiting a Spencer Park property currently undergoing major refurbishments as part of the State Government's separate $319 million Social Housing Economic Recovery Package.
The additional new units are planned for delivery as part of the $4 million Spencer Park renewal project, announced in last week's State Budget.
Spencer Park is one of three regional suburbs to receive funding so far, with further investments to be made throughout regional Western Australia as part of the McGowan Government's record investment in social housing.
The new units will help meet the high demand for singles accommodation in Albany.
- The Spencer Park renewal project will also include:
- refurbishment of existing social housing properties;
- construction of new road connections and footpaths;
- street and landscaping; and
- new public access ways around Mokare Park.
The Spencer Park renewal project is part of the McGowan Government's $875 million injection to social housing, with a record $2.1 billion allocated for the construction of an estimated 3,300 new social homes across WA.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
"My Government is focused on improving the well-being of vulnerable Western Australians, including those in the Albany community. Social housing is an important part of that work.
"Last week's State Budget included the largest ever investment in social housing in WA history, and this includes delivery of more housing options through the Spencer Park renewal project.
"In the coming four years, our Government will invest more than $2.1 billion towards social housing, which will include the delivery of an estimated 3,300 new homes all around the State."
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
"The overwhelming advice I receive as the Minister for Housing is that we need more accommodation for singles, particularly in Albany, and the Spencer Park renewal project will help address that need.
"Final works are still being planned, but I am confident the commitment to deliver up to eight new one and two bedroom units will be welcomed by many.
"The Spencer Park renewal project is about improving the overall amenity of the suburb, as well as the housing options that are available. We will refurbish existing assets, build modern units for singles and carry out works that improve the liveability and connection for all of the people living in Spencer Park."

"Having grown up in Spencer Park, I am thrilled to see the suburb receive this commitment from the McGowan Government.
"The renewal of Spencer Park has been a high priority of mine, and I am confident this investment will make the suburb a more vibrant and attractive place to live.
"We will improve the amenity through better road connections, more footpaths, and landscaping, but this announcement today will also help to modernise and improve the variety of housing available to the most vulnerable people in Albany."
