Preserving Council House For Future Generations

Council House, one of Perth's most recognisable civic buildings, is 63 this year.

Officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 25 March 1963, the building holds a special place in the hearts of many Western Australians and is deeply woven into the State's history.

To ensure Council House continues to serve the community safely and sustainably, the City is undertaking essential remediation works to address water ingress and structural issues identified in parts of the building's Lower Ground Floor.

The works form part of the City's 2025/26 and 2026/27 capital works program and include strengthening the Council House forecourt slab, along with a refresh of the surrounding landscaping.

Fire compliance and waterproofing upgrades will also be carried out in the Council House staff car park to support the long-term safety and integrity of the building.

Temporary changes to building access

From Monday 9 February 2026, the entire Ground Floor of Council House and the front forecourt will be closed while works are completed.

During this time, the Concierge will temporarily relocate to the Lower Ground Floor, and all building access will be via the Lower Ground south entrance only for the duration of the works.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation while we complete these important upgrades.
