Promoting animal welfare in Tasmania

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of initiatives that promote and maintain animal welfare in the state.

Today I was pleased to officially open the new RSPCA Adoption and Retail Centre in Moonah, which will help to support Tasmania's animal welfare arrangements.

Our Government takes animal welfare seriously and we work shoulder to shoulder with the RSPCA to ensure that we maintain a world-class animal welfare system in Tasmania.

I applaud the RSPCA for their work in investigating public complaints under the Animal Welfare Act 1993, which is undertaken in accordance with an agreement with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment.

Tasmania's Animal Welfare Inspectorate consists of RSPCA Inspectors, DPIPWE Veterinary Officers and Animal Biosecurity Officers, selected Wildlife Officers and Tasmania Police Officers.

The RSPCA also performs other important roles such as engaging with the community and normalising and promoting awareness of good animal welfare practices. This is also in partnership with veterinarians and shelter organisations.

Today's opening of the new Adoption and Retail Centre has reinforced the importance of companion animals in Tasmanian lives with a high demand for pets, particularly during COVID-19.
