Restoration work will soon start on two iconic fountains in Colac, as Colac Otway Shire Council protects and enhances them for the future.

The fountains at Memorial Square and the Colac Botanic Gardens will receive a deep clean, repairs and new equipment.

The work will start in late August and will take about eight weeks.

Council's Community Spaces Manager Stephen Parker said the project would improve the function of the fountains and honour their original designs.

"We'll re-line the fountain bases and walls to make them more durable and stop water loss," Mr Parker said.

"New filtration systems and pumps will ensure efficient water circulation and reduce maintenance needs, and both fountains will have a deep clean," he said.

"We're also replacing capping stones on the Memorial Square fountain to restore its original character and finish."

The Memorial Square fountain, also known as the Jack Dillon Fountain in honour of a former Mayor of Colac, was installed in 1997 to replace an older fountain dating to 1973.

The fountain in the Colac Botanic Gardens was installed in the early 1990s, following a proposal in William Guilfoyle's original 1910 plans for the gardens.

"These fountains are well-loved landmarks in Colac, and keeping them in great condition means everyone can continue to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere they bring," Mr Parker said.

Temporary fencing will go around both fountains from late August to allow for the works, but surrounding areas will remain open for public enjoyment.
