Providing certainty for our sustainable forestry sector

Guy Barnett,Minister for Resources

The Tasmanian Government supports Tasmania's Forest Practices System and the Tasmanian Forest Practices Code.

The Government welcomes the passing of validating legislation through the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council this week to resolve a highly technical administrative matter relating to the issuing of a delegation made under the Forest Practices Act 1985.

Tasmania's forestry sector is well-managed, environmentally sustainable and regulated by the independent Forest Practices Authority, despite claims from opponents who are solely focussed on shutting it down.

I wish to stress again that this issue does not go to the safety or appropriateness of forestry operations undertaken on ground.

The Government moved as quickly as possible to remove doubt in Parliament this week and welcomes the support of the Tasmanian Labor Opposition.
