PSA Statement On Global Sumud Flotilla

The Public Service Association stands in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Israel's interception and abduction of New Zealand citizens Youssef Sammour, Rana Hamida, and Samuel Leason is unacceptable.

Our union holds the values of solidarity and justice everywhere; for workers in Aotearoa, for fellow citizens bravely sailing the Mediterranean carrying humanitarian aid, and for our counterpart public service, community, and health workers in Palestine.

We join the call on the New Zealand Government to take urgent action to:

  • Guarantee the safety and safe return of Youssef, Rana, and Samuel through every diplomatic and protective measure available.
  • Join the 16 other UN member states who have declared that any attack or abduction of flotilla participants in international waters will be met with accountability.
  • Ensure the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is empowered and resourced to provide consular support and accountability.
  • Condemn Israel's illegal interceptions and abductions.
  • Consider providing protective support in the Mediterranean.

We stand in solidarity with workers and unions in Italy striking for Palestine and for the flotilla. Peace is union business.
