Public Input Sought on Wild Deer Commercial Use

Tasmanian Government

Consultation is now underway on whether the commercial use of wild shot deer should be permanently approved in Tasmania.

A trial exploring the harvesting of wild shot fallow deer for human consumption through commercial and retail supply chains commenced in 2023.

The trial tested the feasibility of harvesting wild fallow deer for human consumption. It examined food safety, economic and social impacts, and the potential market for wild shot venison.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said the trial confirmed wild-shot deer, if handled correctly, can meet the strict food standards required for safe human consumption.

"There are too many wild fallow deer in the state, and having the ability to use that venison commercially has the potential to play a role in getting those numbers under control," Minister Pearce said.

"Our Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmanians, and I look forward to hearing feedback from landholders, hunters, farmers, meat processors, commercial harvesters and the wider community on this opportunity."
