Public Self Storage Update

Council acknowledges this is a very difficult time for those affected by the fire at Public Self Storage in Scoresby.

In this situation, Council is responsible for ensuring building safety. Council has issued a Building Order which requires sections of Compartment B (the fire impacted section of the building) to be demolished for safety reasons.

Prior to the building being re-occupied, Council requires a post-fire environmental assessment report to be submitted. This is a requirement of the Building Order, and will be reviewed by the Municipal Building Surveyor, in carrying out their functions under the Building Act 1993, to ensure that the building is structurally safe to occupy.

The Building Order in place also prohibits the use of, or access to, the building whilst make safe works are being carried out.

Council has not directed, authorised, nor been involved in the disposal or salvage of any tenants' belongings - this is not our role. The management of tenants' contents, including assessment of damage and process of recovering belongings rests with the building owner, their insurer, and their appointed contractors.
