Police are urging community members to remain vigilant following a string of deliberately lit bushfires across towns in the Central North Police District.
District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Paul Quigg, said multiple suspicious fires have been reported throughout the police district over the last few weeks which is of particular concern due to the current dry conditions.
"Now is a timely reminder for the community to be vigilant and to report anyone acting suspiciously, whether it's in parkland, scrub or bushland, and to immediately notify Triple 000 or the local police station so we can apprehend these people," he said.
Suspicious fires at Bourke, Cobar and Nyngan are among those being investigated by police who said it is fortunate no property has been destroyed as a result.
About 11.50pm on Sunday 6 October 2019, police responded to reports of a small grass fire near the intersection of Hope and Yanda streets at Bourke.
The fire was extinguished by the Rural Fire Service.
Investigations continue.
About 1.25pm on Monday 7 October 2019, officers attached to Central North PD responded to reports of a small grass fire on the levy bank on Yanbacoona Street at Bourke.
The fire was extinguished by the local fire brigade.
Inquiries indicate a group of children on motorbikes were seen to be acting suspiciously in the area shortly before the fire was reported.
Investigations continue.
