An idea from a community member has inspired a new resource that is making the Surf Coast Shire more accessible and inclusive.
For Jan Juc resident Liz Conning, a simple outing to a shop or hospitality venue requires planning.
"I have rheumatoid arthritis," she said. "I had my first bout 40 years ago, then it went away for a while, then it came back with a vengeance. I've had both hips replaced, a knee replaced, and a shoulder replaced.
"I also had a brain tumour – which thank heavens is gone – but it caused me to be unsteady on my feet and walk around with a stick or frame."
A previous member of Surf Coast Shire Council's Disability Advisory Committee, Liz contacted Council to ask if there was a map which showed accessible toilets and venues.
Council's Disability Inclusion and Business Support teams decided to create one, to make it easier for customers to choose a venue that meets their needs.
Councillor Phoebe Crockett was pleased to see restaurants and cafes from across the shire adding their accessibility features to the map.
"Accessibility can take many forms," Cr Crockett said. "We want the map to include all the ways that people are thinking of others' needs: whether that's wheelchair access, menus with large text, or nearby accessible parking.
"It all helps foster an accessible and inclusive community, where everyone can participate."
Liz thanked the businesses and venues which considered access requirements.
"Having wider doors or having a ramp, those types of things help look after us oldies, and also young people who have difficulties as well," she said.
"It's a matter of looking out for all people and helping where you can."
The Accessible Cafes and Restaurants map is available online via surfcoast.vic.gov.au/AccessMap. People wanting a printed copy can call Council on 5261 0600 to arrange one.
Local hospitality businesses are invited to add themselves to the map and share their accessible features with customers.
