When it comes to the movies, we get so much more out of the experience when we can identify with the characters, hear our own language and accent in the dialogue, and see a bit of ourselves in the places shown on the big screen. We can project ourselves into the movie and make it our own. It is what gives film the power to enrich our culture and promote our identity.
This is why the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, was pleased to announce the Government of Canada’s support for the Fondation Québec Cinéma’s touring film festival, the Tournée Québec Cinéma. The project is designed to promote exchanges between Francophone and Francophile movie fans by showcasing works by Quebec, Franco-Ontarian, and Indigenous filmmakers.
Funding of $60,000, provided through the Official Languages Support Programs, will help organizers roll out the tour, which will showcase films through activities such as screenings and after-movie discussions, film workshops in both official languages, and talks with media arts professionals.
“Taking part in a project like this, which promotes Francophone and Indigenous culture and the work of our creators and craftspeople across the country, is a perfect fit for our priorities as a government. That is why we are happy to support the Tournée Québec Cinéma.”
-The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages
“This is excellent news for our organization. This support allows us to consolidate our partnerships with Francophone communities across the country. It is also a wonderful acknowledgement by the federal government for our tour, especially when it comes to official languages, which means a great deal to us.”
-Ségolène Roederer, Executive Director of Québec Cinéma
The Fondation Québec Cinéma (Québec Cinéma) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989. Its mission is to promote Quebec cinema and its artists and artisans through promotional and educational activities.
Québec Cinéma produces three major showcases for Quebec films-Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma, Tournée Québec Cinéma and Gala Québec Cinéma-which reach more than two million people in Canada and around the world every year. The organization is dedicated to the discoverability of Quebec cinema and raising audience awareness, and it also offers school programming through Lab Québec Cinéma.
By adding to the lineup of existing film festivals, Tournée Québec Cinéma is able to bring Quebec, French-Canadian and Indigenous movies to the big screen all across Canada.
