For about 700 property owners in our city, Friday 5 May is an auspicious date.
Today they became owners of homes in Wollongong's newest suburb, Stream Hill.
The suburb name has been formally gazetted and in use from 5 May to formalise the new boundaries between Stream Hill and Kembla Grange. The gazettal marks the end of a long process that started more than two years ago, involved multiple stages of community input, and has seen the new name endorsed by the Geographical Names Board and approved by the NSW State Government.
"There has been extensive community engagement in recent years about new suburbs being developed within West Dapto to accommodate the needs of this fast-growing area. It's exciting to see the finalisation of this suburb and the name come into daily use,'' Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
"The name Stream Hill was voted on by this community and approved by the Geographical Names Board. It has a strong connection to this place with the name drawn from the title of an early land grant and the location of one of the oldest homesteads still standing in the area.''
The new suburb boundaries are needed as more and more people move into the West Dapto area.
"We're seeing a real change to the look and feel of the West Dapto area as it shifts from being a rural landscape to residential urban living,'' Cr Bradbery said.
"With this comes a need to manage these areas differently. There are guidelines in place for urban suburbs that encourage them to be around 500ha in size, which allows for timely emergency services response times and efficient mail delivery, for example.
