The Crisafulli Government is delivering its fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan, with the official opening of the $76.9 million Sub-Acute Expansion at Gold Coast University Hospital.
The new H-Block is a 70-bed, purpose-built facility bringing together three specialised services under one roof which include:
- Two Geriatric Evaluation and Management Units
- A Complex Management Unit
- A new Acute Cognitive Unit.
The Crisafulli Government invested $146 million in new funding in the 2025-26 Budget to address Labor's under-investment in hospitals and regional health services over the past decade, including for the Gold Coast University Hospital Sub-Acute Expansion project.
Saving this project from Labor's failure will help ease pressure on the broader health system while introducing a new model of care tailored to the needs of older Queenslanders, after 10 years of decline under Labor left the State's health system on life support.
After significant delays under the former Labor government, the Crisafulli Government has delivered new beds at the Gold Coast's H-Block, with even more to come through the new 600-bed Coomera Hospital, ensuring Queenslanders have access to world class health services where and when you need them.
As part of the Crisafulli Government's commitment to deliver easier access to health services to Queenslanders, this includes helping older adults age well in care closer to home. More than 1,600 staff have received dementia care training ahead of this new facility's opening later this month.
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said that after a decade of decline under Labor, the Crisafulli Government, in its first 10 months, is delivering the largest investment in hospital infrastructure in Queensland's history through the fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan.
"The delivery of H-Block is a clear example of the projects the Crisafulli Government is saving—projects Labor had no plans or funding to deliver," Minister Nicholls said.
"Through our Hospital Rescue Plan, the Crisafulli Government has funded this expansion to make sure we meet the needs of our community, now and into the future.
"Importantly, these new beds and combined services represent a significant step forward in how we care for older Queenslanders and people living with dementia or other complex health conditions here on the Gold Coast."
Member for Bonney Sam O'Connor said that after years of neglect under Labor, the Gold Coast was finally getting the hospital infrastructure upgrades our community deserves.
"The Crisafulli Government is backing the Gold Coast with more beds and better facilities to ease the pressure on our hardworking health workers so they can deliver the best care for local patients," Minister O'Connor said.
Gold Coast Health Board Chair Professor Cindy Shannon AM said the new facility would help ease pressure across the broader Gold Coast health system.
"H Block provides a dedicated, purpose-built environment for older adults with complex needs, and supports our clinicians to deliver care in the right setting, with the right resources," Professor Shannon said. "We can't stop our patients from growing old, but we can do better in how we meet their needs."
