Quantum leap forward as handheld smart devices rolled out to frontline officers

  • $34.6 million for roll-out of personal mobile devices to police
  • Technology to increase efficiency and free up officers for more time on the beat
  • Part of the McGowan Government's commitment to properly equipping our police
  • The McGowan Government is providing $34.6 million for the roll-out of personal issue mobile smart devices to police officers.

The funding will deliver 3,500 handheld computer devices with a suite of applications that will ensure access to crucial policing functions in the field.

Significantly, this technology will reduce the need for officers to return to the station to complete administrative tasks, allowing officers to spend more time policing the streets and the community.

The mobile devices will give police faster access to more accurate information to make decisions, resulting in improved officer safety and public safety outcomes.

Officers will be able to perform tasks such as identity checks and the recording of statements whilst out in the field.

Today's announcement is part of the McGowan Government's commitment to equip our police with the accoutrements and tools they need to do their job safely and effectively.

It is on top of $15.4 million already committed towards the roll-out of personal body armour to frontline officers and $1.9 million for number plate recognition technology.

The McGowan Government is investing more than $5.9 billion in the WA Police Force over the next four years, as part of its commitment to community safety.

As stated by Police Minister Michelle Roberts:

"These smart devices will streamline police work and free up officers to spend more time in the community.

"It's important for our police to be equipped with the latest technology.

"Regrettably under the Barnett-Harvey Government, investment in technology for our police was slashed and WA Police were left in a digital dark age.

"I'm delighted that we have been able to fund this important technology for our police.

"It reflects the McGowan Government's commitment to properly equipping our police and ensuring a modern and flexible Police Force."
