Interim arrangements for school students to learn at home have been announced, while the number of new COVID-19 cases in Queensland grew by only 35 over the Easter period, including seven in today's figures for a new total of 987.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said while the statistics have again been extremely encouraging, she and the Education Minister wanted to give parents and children certainty about schooling for the first part of Term 2.

"Schools will be open for vulnerable children and the children of essential workers. But from next Monday, all other students will learn from home," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"We are in extraordinary times and this will take place until Friday the 22nd of May, and then we will review it again."

  • The Premier said the COVID-19 case figures for Easter were very good.

"That is an extraordinary effort, in terms of only 35 positives over Easter," she said.

"But like I said, this is just the start, there's a huge road to go, a long way to go and we need to keep this up.

"And we don't want to just flatten that curve, I think we're going to smash that curve."

  • In relation to professional sport, the Premier reiterated that there was no health advice to suggest that any sporting code could resume.

"I would love to see the footy back, I would love it just like anyone else," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"But it would be negligent not to listen to the health advice when it comes to sport as well."
