A Queensland man has been charged with allegedly making a threat to a federal parliamentarian.
The AFP charged the Mackay North man, 66, today (1 September, 2026) after an allegedly threatening voicemail message was left with the office of a federal parliamentarian.
The voicemail allegedly contained abusive language directed to the parliamentarian, their family and associates, and threats of serious violence.
Investigators from an AFP National Security Investigations team executed a search warrant at a North Mackay home today (1 September, 2026), where they seized a phone and documents for examination.
The man was charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.
He was granted police bail to appear before Mackay Magistrates Court on 21 September, 2026.
AFP Detective Superintendent Anthony Conway said the AFP was committed to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion.
"Through our National Security Investigations (NSI) teams, we will continue to target those who use intimidation, threats of violence, hateful rhetoric or divisive conduct to damage Australia's social fabric," Det-Supt Conway said.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion.
