Queensland Offers $20K Bonus to Kiwi Cops

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is rolling out the welcome mat for our mates across the ditch, inviting New Zealand police officers to consider swapping their jandals for thongs and joining the Sunshine State's frontline.

The QPS holds New Zealand police officers in high regard, recognising them as some of the best in the world. Their experience, shared values, and sense of humour align seamlessly with our own. After all, Australia has a long-standing tradition of embracing the best of New Zealand and proudly calling them our own.

To make the move even sweeter, the QPS is offering a $20,000 relocation bonus for experienced police officers who join our ranks. It's our way of saying, "Welcome to Queensland!" and helping you settle into your new home in the Sunshine State.

Queensland offers a lifestyle that's hard to beat. Imagine trading chilly winters for year-round sunshine and swapping your puffer jacket for boardies. You'll still find all your favourite Kiwi treats in our supermarkets, and with short flights back to New Zealand, staying connected with family has never been easier.

Since 2024, 149 New Zealand police officers have successfully entered and completed the Police Abridged Competency Education (PACE) program. This intensive 20-week course, offered at the QPS Academy, is specifically designed to fast-track experienced officers into frontline policing in Queensland. The program focuses on equipping officers with a comprehensive understanding of Queensland legislation, as well as QPS procedures and policies, ensuring they are fully prepared to serve the community effectively.

Deputy Commissioner John Tims, a former Deputy Commissioner of the New Zealand Police, made the move across the ditch in January, bringing with him 38 years' experience in law enforcement. Deputy Commissioner Tims said Queensland is a place where officers can thrive both professionally and personally.

"The QPS has a proud history of welcoming officers from New Zealand into the QPS family," Deputy Commissioner Tims said.

"With opportunities to work in some of the most beautiful and diverse locations in the world, Queensland is the perfect place to take your policing career to the next level."

The QPS offers a range of career pathways, from general duties to specialised units like Tactical Crime, Mounted Police, Water Police, and Forensic Services. Whether you're keen to patrol the bustling streets of Brisbane, protect the stunning coastline, or serve in our vibrant regional communities, there's a place for you here.

Constable Ryan Lilleby, a former New Zealand Police officer with 18 years of experience, recently joined the QPS and shared his thoughts on the transition.

"Queensland police have recognised that New Zealand produces some of the best police officers in the world. My skills, knowledge, and experience have been truly valued here," says Constable Lilleby

"I've even been issued a jumper as part of my uniform, but it's still in its packet. I haven't used it once and we're in the middle of winter."

So, if you're ready to trade your chilly mornings for sunny skies, your marmite for vegemite, and your chilly bin for an esky, Queensland is ready to welcome you with open arms.

A career with the Queensland Police Service offers diverse roles, unique challenges, and the chance to make a real difference every day. From emergency response and crime prevention to community engagement and public safety, no two days are ever the same.

From our bustling cities to remote towns and pristine coastline, policing in Queensland offers a career and lifestyle as diverse as the communities you'll serve.
