DOC Fund Grants $1.7M to Chatham Islands

  • Hon Tama Potaka

Conservation Minister Tama Potaka has announced $1.7 million in funding from the 2026 Department of Conservation Community Fund for two projects on Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Islands.

"Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Islands is one of New Zealand's most unique conservation environments, and this funding will help deliver critical support to protect its endangered wildlife and ecosystems, and reduce predator numbers across the archipelago," Mr Potaka says.

Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust will receive $1,169,900 for a project to remove feral cats from Rangihaute Pitt Island. This will protect at least 14 threatened bird species, including the critically endangered tūturuatu/tchūriwat'/shore plover, and restore several critical ecosystems.

The Chatham Islands Farmers Association will receive $543,240 to undertake pig control, reducing the impact on threatened species and critically endangered ecosystems, as well. This work will begin on Rangihaute Pitt Island before commencing on the main Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Island.

Combined, the projects are expected to bring in $2.8 million in co-investment, including donations or other in-kind support, such as volunteer time and services.

"With Imi and Iwi support for both projects, and strong community backing, I have great hopes for both of these initiatives, and I look forward to the day when our native species thrive on predator-free Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Islands," Mr Potaka says.
