  • After 10 years of decline under Labor, the Crisafulli Government is delivering on the promise to help kids catch up, keep up and stay in school.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a fresh start for Whitfield State School in Cairns with a $13 million Performing Arts Centre.

Whitfield State School has a vibrant creative arts program, with opportunities for all students including specialised academies for students to expand their passion and skills beyond the set curriculum.

Around 450 students participate in creative arts at the school each day and once built, the Performing Arts Centre will also benefit the broader community, with access available for other arts and sporting groups.

The new purpose-built facility will provide a performance area, tiered seating and kiosk, giving eager students the chance to express their talents and thrive.

10 years of decline under the former Labor Government meant a lack of planning for future population growth and a failure to properly resource our schools, with Queensland students paying the price.

Minister for Education and the Arts Langbroek said he was delighted to visit the school to confirm the new Performing Arts Centre would be delivered by 2027.

"The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its election commitment to deliver a Performing Arts Centre for Whitfield State School," Minister Langbroek said.

"Having a contemporary indoor performance space means students can learn dance, drama, music and associated technical skills in a professional environment.

"This is another way the Crisafulli Government is delivering a fresh start for Queensland school students.

Principal Matt Thompson said the Whitfield State School community was thrilled with the plans for the new centre.

"This is a game changer for our school," Mr Thompson said. "Our parents strongly supported a new facility dedicated exclusively to performing arts and our successful programs.

"This will provide an outstanding home for our performing arts where we can extend the talents of our students and welcome their families and the wider community to witness their success."
